Rugs: The One Accessory That Grounds an Entire Space

When decorating a space whether it is a living room, bedroom, or even an entry, a rug can set the tone, add color and texture. From traditional, bohemian, modern, or transitional styles a rug also adds warmth and helps with sound absorption.

The standard sizes of most rugs are 5 x 8, 6 x 9, and 8 x 10. With the growth of family and media rooms, the rugs are now 9 x 12, 10 x 14, and 13 x 15. My favorite rug style is a vintage farmhouse. Why? Because it can go with almost any style and has a muted color and slightly tufted feel.

Natural rugs are in season as well, but I love the natural mixes with chenille and cotton because they are softer underfoot. Indoor-outdoor rugs are nice if you have kids or pets and need something easy to clean.

Speaking of easy to clean, most man-made rugs or machine weaved generally are relatively easy to care for whereas most hand-woven Persians, tufted, or wool rugs shed a bit and you will have to send them out to clean.

If your furniture is neutral, most of the time I like to pull the colors from the art and rug to establish the overall palette. No matter which size or style you select, the rug is the must-have item for your home to make it complete.
